FireLidar
Currently, thermal imaging systems are in limited use by fire departments to aid firefighters in visualizing the situation of victims in smoke filled environments. Our goal in this project is to design a man-portable, affordable, eye-safe imaging system that permits not only the visualization of victims, but aspects of their surroundings (steps, obstructions, missing floors, fallen objects in path, etc) that are obscured by the glare and thermal bloom of the fire and the scattering of light by the smoke. Other applications include battlefield scenarios when fire and smoke obscure targeting systems and human vision, as well as DOD firefighting, including aircraft and vehicular fires.

Volume Holographic Optical Elements (VHOE)
Numerous state of the art detection systems rely on the ability to discriminate weak optical signals in the presence of significant unwanted background noise such as solar radiation. Volume holographic filters can be built extremely narrowband, due to the requirement for light to couple through the entire thickness of the grating. RL Associates, Inc. has 10 years of experience designing and building custom volume holographic filters for LIDAR systems.

NASA NIR EHD
Within the next 20 years, the FAA expects air traffic operations to increase by 150-250%. To meet the demands of this high traffic environment, the Next Generation of Aviation Transportation Systems will require significantly improved hazard mitigation systems both for ground-level and in-flight hazards. To this end, RL Associates, Inc. is developing a near-infrared (NIR) system for characterization and mitigation of external obscurants and hazards. The system will be capable of imaging through a multitude of airborne and ground-level obscurants to identify targets, as well as providing an early warning of the severity of airborne hazards.
